Vitamin A (retinol) is a fat-soluble vitamin which has many important roles to pay in the body. One of the major roles is the maintenance of our vision. Vitamin A helps to keep various structures, including the cells, healthy and is required for transduction of light into the nerve signals in the retina, for proper sight. Vitamin A is also required for normal growth and repair of tissue in all stages of life from the foetus onwards.
Combining with vitamin D serves to strengthen these processes as well as maintaining important blood levels of calcium, which keeps this essential mineral within our bodies, rather than excreting it. This means that the calcium can be moved as necessary around the body to improve bone and teeth health where needed. This is especially useful for conditions such as osteoporosis and rickets. A lack of vitamin D has also been linked with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), and high blood pressure (hypertension).
